IMPORTANT,

Your 1424/24. Their Lordships recognise that

possibilities of direct approach to Japanese naval authorities

have now been exhausted, In course of conversation with

Japanese Foreign Minister on 22nd April H. M. Ambassador

mentioned ACRES case and asked for vessel's release. Minister

promised to take matter up at once.

In same interview H. M. Ambassador also called

attention to recent deterioration in treatment by Japanese

Navy of British ships trading on China coast and mentioned

particularly the interference with junks at Foochow and with

shipping in Yangtse delta. This seems to correspond with

intention of your 1251/19.
